Jamaica Tourism Board discover truth behind Briton's travel trends

Cottage Holiday In Wales The desire of Britons to travel abroad is attributable to the relatively low cost of foreign travel - 46% of Britons said the cost of holidays abroad is the main reason for leaving the UK, suggesting renewed competition between the airlines and travel agencies is pushing down costs. Similarly, 14% of British tourists surveyed say a strong pound is a key factor in choosing a destination abroad, as Britons aim to make their money go further.

Caravan Holiday In Wales With more than 26 million Britons flying off for a sunshine break this summer, a study by the Jamaica Tourist Board reveals why British people choose to escape the UK for more exotic climates. The study asked a GB representative sample of 2,000 people what was the most important factor when choosing a holiday destination abroad.

Accommodation Holiday Wales Cost of the holiday: Almost one in two people (46%) say cost still governs their decision when choosing a holiday destination. Young people (teenagers) are especially conditioned by the cost of travel (61%), rather than more mature tourists aged over 50 years old (16%). And with so many lower cost flights and package deals available, price conditions for foreign holidays have never looked so good.

Holiday Last Minute Wales In addition, 35% of those people planning to holiday outside the UK say they plan to take package holidays abroad - as a means of lowering the cost of reaching warmer climates.

Catering Holiday Self Wales Food & Culture: Wanting a change from their lifestyles in the UK, more than one in three people (38%) want to travel to foreign climates to sample more exotic food and culture. Surprisingly, this is especially important for younger tourists in their twenties (40%) than for people aged over 60 (27%). It is also a far more important reason for selecting a destination abroad for independent travellers (46%), compared to package holidaymakers (34%).

Holiday Wales Walking Friends: One in three people (33%) claim their main reason for selecting a holiday destination abroad is to spend time away with friends at a location for all. Unsurprisingly, more young people choose to go to a foreign location on the basis of their friends decisions (51%) than more mature tourists aged over 50 (33%).

Family Holiday Wales British weather: One in four people (24%) say they will go abroad to escape British weather. Clearly the temperamental weather effects people over the age of 50 more as 31% claim this is a key reason to choosing a foreign location.

Holiday Riding Wales The weather in Britain is not the only thing to drive people to exotic climates. 5% of Britons say they are just desperate to get away from road, rail and tube delays in Britain.

Adventure Holiday Wales Sports Events: Finally, with the start of Euro 2004 and the Olympics just around the corner, 15% of Britons say this is a key reason for leaving the UK. Across all age groups, people are motivated by the big sporting events over the summer.

Holiday Park South Wales David Barber at the Jamaica Tourist Board said; "Millions of Britons are planning to jet off to more exotic climates this summer. People are more willing to travel beyond the UK as competition between airlines and travel agents forces prices down and a strong pound makes foreign travel more appealing. We hope to see confidence in long-haul travel increase this year as people select more exotic climates."
