Louvre Museum The
Mus du Louvre is unquestionably one of the
finest museums in the world. Home to thousands of classic and
modern masterpieces, the Louvre Museum is the jewel in the crown of
French culture, a towering testament to European civilisation and
history.
The approach to the
Mus du Louvre alone is
breathtaking. Stroll through the splendour of the surrounding
architecture until, unexpectedly, you sight the magnificent
modernist glass pyramid and descend into the vast, labyrinthine
space of the gallery. The works of art and antiquity housed in the
Louvre Museum are unrivalled and overwhelming but just as
extraordinary is the building itself.

There are many masterpieces at the
Mus
dersay including work by Delacroix, Manet, Guaguin,
C anne, Monet, Renoir, Sisley, van Gogh and many more great
artists. Among the spectacular works on display at the Orsay museum
is Auguste Cl inger Woman Bitten by a Snake which scandalised
all of Paris in 1847 by supposedly depicting a woman not bitten by
a snake but in the throes of passion and, said prominent critics of
the time, modelled from real life on 19th Century socialite
Apollonie Sabatier.
As with so many Parisian museums the building itself is a wonder.
In this case much of the beauty of the
Mus
d'Orsay stems from its earlier incarnation as a railway
station. The station clock remains, as does the spectacular
iron-framed glass roof and many other reminders of the practical
beauty of infrastructure engineering. During the conversion from
station to museum the painter of Orsay said that the station had
resembled a palace of fine art even when it was first built.
Mus d'Orsay is one of the finest museums in
Paris, both for the fantastic building itself and the treasures
inside and is truly a wonder which no Paris visitor should miss.

Towers of Notre Dame The construction of the
Gothic cathedral of Notre Dame, undertaken at the initiative of
Maurice de Sully, began about 1160 and was completed within 40
years.
Around 1250, Jean de Chelles built the north arm and began work on
the south arm, which was completed by Jean de Montreuil. From the
middle of the 13th century to the beginning of the 14th century,
the chapels of Notre Dame were constructed between the buttresses
of the nave. The buttresses next to the chevet were built by Pierre
de Montreuil and are particularly fine.

Le
Toit De La Grande Arche Le Toit de la Grande Arche, often
referred to simply as the
Grande Arche, is a fine
modern building in an interesting and newly redeveloped district of
Paris. The building catches the light in intriguing ways and is a
bold and vibrant contribution to Paris architecture, proving that
this is a city not content to live off it former glories and wallow
in the past, but one that will invest in new ideas.
