Ch teau de
Compi gne passed into the jurisdiction of the
Minister for the Interior. In 1795 all furniture was sold and its
works of art were sent to the Mus um Central. Napoleon
visited in 1799 and again in 1803. In 1804 the ch teau became
a domaine imp rial and in 1807 Napoleon ordered that it be
made habitable again.
The greatest architects and decorators of the day oversaw its
remodelling. Its layout was altered, a ballroom added, and the
garden was replanted and linked directly to the forest. The result
is a striking example of First Empire style (1808-1810), although
some traces of the earlier d cor survive. Auguste Luchet
remarked that "Compi gne speaks of Napoleon as Versailles
does of Louis XIV.
Today's visitors can find three distinct museums within the
chateau: the apartments themselves; the Museum of the Second
Empire; and the National Car Museum, which contains a fine
collection of carriages, bicycles, and automobiles. All three
museums are worth visiting and offer free entry with the
Paris Pass.

CHATEAU DE PIERREFONDS
The
Ch teau de Pierrefonds is a majestic and
beautiful palace which has weathered the whims of kings for
hundreds of years and is certain to be a favorite of any Paris
visitor. The original Ch teau de Pierrefonds was built by
Philippe d' Orl ans in the 15th century and demolished on
the order of Louis XIII in the 17th century. 200 years later
Napoleon III ordered that
Ch teau de
Pierrefonds be rebuilt as an imperial residence. This work
was undertaken by one of the greatest designers of the
day-Viollet-le-Duc, and it is often cited as his greatest work.
The
Ch teau de Pierrefonds features a
permanent exhibition of the masterpieces of 19th century
ornamentation produced by the Monduit workshops. These expert
craftsmen restored a wealth of historical monuments, worked
extensively for the Great Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900, and helped
to create the Statue of Liberty. Looking at the masterpieces on
display, it is easy to understand why they were given that
significant commission.
Ch teau de Pierrefonds rises majestically
out of the Compi gne forest. It is both imposing and
spectacularly beautiful, with particularly lovely grounds. Is
certainly among the great ch teaux of France. With the
Paris Pass, you can enjoy all the splendor that
this incedible castle has to offer.

The
Ch teau de Chantilly stands in the
centre of a vast estate covering 7, 800 hectares; the ch teau
and estate have been built up by the owners of Chantilly since the
Middle Ages. The
Ch teau de Chantilly houses
one of the finest museums of historical paintings in France and has
a fantastically stocked library containing rare and precious books
and manuscripts.
The
Mus e Cond s collection
is rivaled in terms of size only by that of the Louvre; it
contains: over 1, 000 paintings, 2, 500 drawings, and 2, 500
engravings. The library contains 30, 000 books, including 12, 000
old prints and upward of 1500 manuscripts. Works in the museum
include those of Raphael and many other old masters.
Visitors tend to come here either to see the museum or the
wonderful ch teau itself. However, increasingly visitors are
flocking to see the fantastic gardens in all their bygone
hedonistic glory. There are canals and waterfalls, fountains and
water jets, lush flower borders, English and Chinese style gardens,
dozens of statues and sculptures. It is a lovely place to linger.

preserved remnant of extraordinary decadence and beauty. Alongside

CHAPELLE EXPIATOIRE
Commissioned by Louis XVIII and designed by the architect
Pierre-Fran ois-L onard Fontaine in 1815, the
Chapelle Expiatoire is a small but sublime
monument to the Restoration and not a sight to be missed by Paris
visitors. This beautiful and seldom visited neoclassical chapel is
built on the former Madeleine cemetery, the site where Louis XVI
and Marie-Antoinette were laid to rest after they were guillotined
and in which the bodies of 3, 000 victims of the revolution are
buried.
No
Paris Pass sightseeing tour would be complete
without visiting this lingering reminder of the French revolution.
The
Chapelle Expiatoire also represents a pinnacle
of neoclassical design and a perfect realisation of ancient
architectural principles. It is a chapel of wonder and a dramatic
beauty among the many stunning Paris sights.
The
Chapelle Exapiatoire contains a hall, two
gantries and a vault. The arched arcades within the chapel hall
commemorate the Swiss Guards massacred at Tuileries Palace on
August 10, 1792 whilst defending the Royal family.
In 1862 the cypress trees which surrounded the
Chapelle
Expiatoire were cut down and a public garden was created.
The garden and the chapel itself somehow managed to retain a
peaceful feel as the city of Paris grew.
Chapelle
Expiatoire remains today a magical, haunted place in the
bustling heart of Paris.

HOUSE OF AUGUSTE RODIN AT MEUDON
MAISON D'AUGUSTE RODIN A MEUDON Built in the
style of Louis XIII the
Maison d Auguste Rodin a
Meudon villa on the outskirts of Paris was the home and
workshop of the sculptor Auguste Rodin. The premiere sculptor of
his time in France, Rodin moved to Meudon in 1893 where he lived
with his lifetime companion Rose Beuret.
Creating some of his finest masterpieces here, Rodin worked
tirelessly to create personal works of art while also working on
public commissions to support his family. His beautiful sculptures
are known for their incredible realism and expressiveness; he was
even once accused of creating a plaster cast of a model rather than
having actually sculpted the statue himself.
There is also a museum on the grounds of the
Maison
d Auguste Rodin a Meudon which houses his plaster
studies for some of his most famous works, including such
sculptures as Balzac, the Gates of Hell, and the Kiss.
The house is also surrounded by a garden in which, beneath the gaze
of perhaps his most famous sculpture The Thinker , is
the tomb of Rodin. The
Maison d Auguste Rodin a
Meudon affords the opportunity to take a closer look at
the surroundings of an artist who helped shape art of the 20th
century. He is the leader of a generation of artists and this
museum allows you to explore the space where he created some of his
most intimate works.

MUSEUM OF THE ARMY TOMB OF
NAPOLEON
MUS E DE L'ARM E, TOMBEAU DE NAPOL ON
1ER The
Mus e de L'Arm e at
Les Invalides was originally built by Louis XIV as a hospital and
home for disabled soldiers. It now houses the
Tomb of
Napoleon and the museum of the Army of France. The museum
has a huge collection of military paraphernalia dating from
antiquity to the present day.
The
Mus e de L'Arm e was established
in 1905 by merging the Artillery Museum and the Historical Army
Museum. It contains 500, 000 objects, including weapons, armour,
artillery, uniforms, emblems and paintings.
The permanent displays are organized into historical collections,
and laid out chronologically, thereby enabling an appreciation of
the impact on technological advancement in different eras.
Outstanding among these collections are the Ancient weapons and
Armours collection, the Artillery scale-models collection and the
19th century collection, which displays the tools of the armies of
Napol on.
The other big attraction is the magnificent
Tomb of
Napol on; Napol on passed away in 1821, on
the island of St Helena, where he had been in exile since 1815. He
was buried in a valley beneath the shade of weeping willows. His
remains rested there until October 15th 1840 when King
Louis-Philippe ordered the emperor s body be returned to
France.
The
Tomb of Napol on was designed by the
architect Visconti (1791-1853). It is made from red porphyry with a
green granite base and circled by a crown of laurels and
inscriptions of the great victories of the Empire. The body of the
Emperor was laid in the tomb on April 2nd 1861.
The tomb is very impressive and has been designed so that the
visitor must bow to get a good look. The
Mus e de
l'Arm e is one of the greatest military history
museums in the world and a sight no Paris visitor should miss.
