Marathon des Sables: Blood, sweat and operaPosted Sunday, April 06, 2008, 5:11 PM by Lonely Planet Lonely Planet author Brendan Sainsbury is on the last leg of the daunting Marathon des Sables, a 150 mile (240 km) ultra marathon across the Sahara: holiday last minute wales
Day 6 and the Marathon des Sables suddenly became a race. As the temperature hit 46 degrees Celsius, the first 100 runners recklessly bolted from the start line as if the previous 5 days of madness had been nothing but a warm up. Perhaps the desert has toughened us all up. We certainly look tougher - and a lot rougher too. Seven days unshaven, unshowered and without proper food and we ve started to resemble slightly malnourished desert soldiers from an old WWII movie. catering holiday self wales
Today s stage was a standard 26 mile marathon, but rather than wilting under the Moroccan sun I seemed to discover a new energy. Was it adrenalin, nerves, or the final numbing of my body s pain receptors It s hard to say. Maybe it was the thought of the finish line tomorrow after 245km of blood, sweat and tears. Or maybe it was the promise of tonight s special treat: the race organisers have flown out the Paris Opera to perform for us live in the middle of our disheveled desert camp. A surreal ending to a truly surreal race. holiday wales walking

unbelivable, some image would be good. Thanks, Get to know your world adventure holiday wales
And it was only then - for the first time in 7 days - that I was able to turn around and glance back at what I had long thought to be the impossible road; 152 miles of raw and uncompromising desert wilderness; ten nervous months of dreaming, plotting, training and planning. holiday park south wales
Congratulations on a tremendous--and inspiring--achievement! Your experience puts my daily annoyances into proper perspective. If some of our so-called world leaders were forced to endure even one hour of what you went through, I m sure the planet would be better off. cottage holiday wales
Congratulations Brendan - an awesome achievement! Paul Clammer (Author LP Morocco, currently on the road in Fez and feeling sheepish that the extent of my exertions is currently climbing up and down stairs in trendy riad hotels...) holiday in wales

Day 4 is what the Marathon des Sables is all about, the 75km long stage that crosses precipitous mountains, undulating sand dunes and dried-up lakes, and makes training for the French Foreign Legion look like a relaxing vacation. caravan holiday in wales
I had no idea to prepare for such an undertaking so I just set off running, climbing, and sometimes staggering, while all the time refusing to either stop or look behind me. There were many peaks and troughs during this long dark day (and night) of the soul, but I rallied in the last 8km came in 72nd just as night was falling. camping holiday wales
At the finish, I have never felt so exhausted and struggled to make it back to my tent laden down with my rucksack and mandatory 4 litres of water. Dinner was freeze dried chicken noodles made with cold water and my bed a thin, yet surprisingly comfortable, Moroccan carpet. By 9.30pm I had fallen into a deep slumber dreaming about cheeseburgers and trying to blot out the prospect of Friday s 42km marathon. accommodation holiday wales
Condratulations on the 71 st position. A 4:38 marathon at 46 degrees is totally inspiring! Hope you are feeling well. The home stretch is ahead! What a fabulous experience for you. Gary Jennifer holiday last minute wales
Sounds very hard. catering holiday self wales

The Olympic ControversyPosted Thursday, April 03, 2008, 8:15 PM by Lonely Planet The Chinese government s recent crackdown on violent protests in Tibet has had global effects. In India, ex-politicians are calling for a boycott on all Chinese goods, while Reporters Without Borders is demanding that every nation shun the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. family holiday wales
Meanwhile, Beijing has criticised the efforts of the Dalai Lama to quell the anti-China actions. Will these developments affect your travel considerations Are you considering - or reconsidering - a trip to the Summer Olympics or Tibet More philosophically, should politics be a factor in deciding what parts of the world you want to visit Join the Discussion: holiday riding wales
2 Comments:To pretend that human rights and genocide are merely political issues is an absurd pretense. These isues are not the same as my border vs. yours, my intl influence vs. your trade laws; they are above politics. adventure holiday wales
China has been condemned by Amnesty Intl, Human Rights watch Asia and a host of groups for their complicity in the Darfur Genocide and the repression of Tibetans in occupied Tibet. Both are absolutely unacceptable without reference to politics. holiday park south wales
Genocide and torture have GOT to stop. Please reject business and politics as usual, and boycott China, and let them, your leaders, and your merchants know why. (Send a letter to Apple Computer telling them you won t buy their products b/c made in China, etc.) Travel is cool, China is cool, but not as cool as human rights. Can you really feel good about packing your LP guide (printed in china) and going to China, spending lots of money there, knowing it buys cattle prods to torture tibetans, knowing that the lights you use are lit by oil traded for weapons to kill Darfurians I cannot. cottage holiday wales
Be part of the solution. Rise above business as usual. Demand human rights and no genocide. PS I am an American. PLEASE boycott my country and it s companies too for the torture and rendition - when you stop torture anywhere, the world gets better. -Bruce holiday in wales
I consider myself a very open minded person, but the truth is that I have let politics discourage me from visiting one specific country, a country which is only an hour s drive from where I live, but I wouldn t go there even if I was given a voucher for a five stars hotel at its capital city. I guess my open mindness has its limits... holiday wales

World s Greatest Pub/Bar CrawlsPosted Monday, April 14, 2008, 11:07 PM by Lonely Planet It s an English tradition that the Americans and Australians have perfected: the pub crawl. The ultimate test of endurance, perseverance and social aptitude/ineptitude, the pub crawl can elevate one to legendary status or render one a social pariah for years. caravan holiday in wales
For a great pub crawl, you need a few ingredients: camping holiday wales
a city with pubs in profound proximity accommodation holiday wales
a forgiving transport environment (you don t want cars bearing down on you as you stumble towards your goal) holiday last minute wales
good weather (try crawling on ice - not fun!) catering holiday self wales
an established drinking culture (you don t want to be the boorish outsider who s annoying the locals) holiday wales walking
With all these criteria in mind, we reckon that there are a few incredible cities in the world for a crawl. To us, the obvious ones are New York, Buenos Aires, Madrid, Manchester, Brussels, Munich, Moscow, Prague, Cape Town, Hong Kong and Melbourne. family holiday wales
But we know this is just scraping the surface. Some pub-crawling gems remain nearly undiscovered by the non-local populace - take, for example, Maryborough in Queensland, Australia, which set the record for the world s biggest pub crawl. And then there are the offbeat crawls that you d never think of (a vending-machine crawl in Tokyo Brilliant!). holiday riding wales
So what do you think - are there any pub-crawling gems that the world needs to know about Join the Discussion: adventure holiday wales

Tanya Saleh is a pro windsurfer and Fat Face Team rider; read about her recent adventures in Chile:Ok so I miraculously made it to Chile in one piece with all my kit. We ve been here 3 days and windsurfed every day. The ultimate was yesterday at Topocalma, Logo High, 3.7 weather, and by later afternoon I was literally blown off the water. Guys were overpowered on 3.4 s! The waves are amazing-you can get 6-7-8 turns on a wave! holiday wales
Chile is amazing; the waves are unreal and the beaches are uncrowded. On many occasions we have been the only people sailing fighting only each other for waves! The only negative point I can find about this place is the fact that you have to wear a wetsuit. We ve been here around 20 days and I have sailed 16 of them. There are a whole bunch of beaches to choose from, and each has a different type of wave-some faster, some slower, some hollow-er. cottage holiday in wales

Eli is right - get on your bikes! peak, oil Sunday evening musings, after 14 outlaws were fed lunch and wine. Do you know where our crude oil comes from We produce about 50% of what we need (back a generation or so we produced 100%). The other 50% comes from a variety of sources in the broad SE Asian and Middle East region. Here are the approximate figures for the top six suppliers: Vietnam (28%), PNG (14%), UAE (13%), Malaysia (11%), Brunei (8%), NZ (7%). Within five years we will produce about 40% or so (demand will increase, and local production will probably decline - our production peaked in 2000). cottage holiday wales
The problem with the current arrangements however, is that the producer (exporting) nations have a few issues of their own. Firstly, their production is declining - this is a geological reality, secondly, their domestic consumption is rising, in some cases rising rapidly, thirdly, all nations are now aware of peak oil, and will increasingly hoard or preserve their known reserves (both to meet domestic needs, and to maximise price over the longer term), and fourthly, the big players in the game (EU, USA, Japan, China, etc) will increasing make deals and lock in future production to meet their needs. holiday in wales
Where does this leave small countries like Australia At least we have capacity to produce 50% of our current needs - most of Europe produces none. And we have ample other resources to trade in certain circumstances. We also have a lot of natural gas (although it is being sold to major players almost exclusively - we are selling the farm at a great rate). holiday wales
We could be in serious trouble in five years, certainly ten. Maybe $5.00 per litre petrol doesn t concern us too much, if we can still have availability (but I clearly remember the petrol rationing and queues around the block in the 1970s). I guess I don t understand why this (and related issues) aren t the lead stories every day, and the major preoccupation of our leaders . cottage holiday in wales
Oh, that s right - Kevin Rudd is off chasing a much more important goal - the 2018 Soccer World Cup! Who said this mob was any different from the Tories ... certainly not me. Have a great week ... I trust you ride to work! caravan holiday in wales

4They re a resource not to be scoffed at, The original Ghan and then we cureently have in Queensland thousands of brumbies being slaughtered. family holiday wales
It s too easy fpr politicians to do easy things out of sight, build infrastructure that could only be needed for a few more decades rather than be talking up staggering of working and driving hours. People will start riding when economics force them to. But the Soccer world cup and every little bit of new development all adds up to using energy. No government would have the balls to bring in restrictions that says you should build only this style and size house and you re entitled to X ammount of power, and again it will only happen when supply/economiocs dictate. holiday riding wales

I sincerely appreciate your comment about traveling with a smaller impact or footprint. It's been on my mind a great deal lately as I plan future trips, from the impact on climate change of my plane trip, to the influence tourism has on the communities I visit. It's be great for Lonely Planet to do more education to travelers about how we can reduce our impacts, though your own site and through other media outlets. Thanks!
