Overview Loved to deathBy Tony and Maureen Wheeler cottage holiday in wales
Loved to death. These days it s a phrase that more and more travel possibilities get tarnished with. We scratch our heads and wonder just when Bali s Kuta or India s Goa morphed from quiet surfer escapes or laid back hippy hangouts into international resorts of wall to wall shops, restaurants and package hotels. Cities the world over worry about how they re going to cope with ever increasing flows of tourists. caravan holiday in wales
Late afternoon at Kuta BeachAt Lonely Planet sustainable and responsible have always been parts of our vocabulary. In our early days, those key words had yet to be irrevocably linked with tourism. But looking back at our earlier books it s pretty clear that we realised from the start that making a connection to the places we visited was a vital part of the sage message we wanted our guidebooks to carry, right down to how they are produced. camping holiday wales
Today, more than ever, we re utterly convinced of the incredible importance of travel. It s only through travelling, through meeting people that we begin to understand that we re all sharing this world. We are all coming along for the ride, despite the barriers which governments, religions and economic and political beliefs often seem to build up between us. accommodation holiday wales
With information on this website and in our books, we hope to inspire you to try a new, far more rewarding, way of travelling. So how do we make that ride not just a quick fairground twirl, but something that we can enjoy for our travelling lives and pass on to our children and future generations By changing our travel habits and thinking differently about how, where and why we travel. Responsible travel means assessing our impact on the environment and local cultures and economies - and acting to make that impact as positive as possible. We re including more information in our guidebooks and on this website on how you can personally travel more responsibly. holiday last minute wales
Responsible tourism has incredible potential to have a positive impact on some of our most pressing global issues: peace and poverty, not to mention the influence it can have on biodiversity conservation. As a company, we have committed to ensuring all our staff travel is carbon neutral by paying to offset the carbon emissions of our airline flights through the pro-environment projects of climate-care. catering holiday self wales
Camel rides on beach at sunsetBy 2020 it s estimated that 1.5 billion people will be travelling each year. It s not hard to understand how each one of us needs to consider our personal contribution (as Lonely Planet does) to sustaining the natural and cultural wonders of our planet so that future generations can enjoy the same life-changing adventures we have shared. holiday wales walking
Today there s no way of avoiding the importance of travelling responsibly. With the information on this website and in our books, we hope to inspire you to try a new, far more rewarding, way of travelling. family holiday wales

Thorn Tree Making Pain-Free BooksLonely Planet works hard to reduce waste in the production and distribution of our books. This means more than just sourcing environmentally friendly paper. Many of the steps we take may be invisible to the untrained eye but, as travel publishers, we realise the world is a fragile place and that environmentally responsible production is the only real option. We ve already put some really great initiatives in place, and we ll be continually looking for ways to improve, but so far, here s what we re doing: adventure holiday wales
Reducing Excess StockWe have gotten smart with our forecasting, to ensure fewer copies are left over at the end of an edition s life. Some of those left-overs are donated to charities, although the time-sensitive nature of the information in our books means they are not that useful to schools and libraries. holiday park south wales
Our detailed forecasting system and flexible printing schedule means Lonely Planet has a returns rate which is well below the industry average. cottage holiday wales
We have designed our global distribution system to minimise the number of times a book is moved. This has lowered the amount of carbon emissions involved in distributing Lonely Planet titles. holiday in wales
| back to top holiday wales
Using Smart DesignLonely Planet guidebooks use a standard series design (template) which minimises waste in book production. cottage holiday in wales
Paper is sourced in a format to meet this design, so waste associated with trimming standard stock sizes is reduced. caravan holiday in wales
In order to reduce the weight of our titles and thus distribute them with less environmental impact, we use the thinnest paper possible. We rigorously edit and format our content to get the maximum amount of information on every page. camping holiday wales
| back to top accommodation holiday wales
Sourcing Kind PaperLonely Planet is committed to using Ancient Forest Friendly Paper (AFF) that is 100% Forest Stewardship Council plantation timber approved. This means we use paper products that aren t produced from ancient forests. Overall approximately 80% of the paper we use is AFF paper. holiday last minute wales
We work with suppliers to further improve the environmental credentials of our paper. We work with Greenpeace s Markets Initiative group to ensure: catering holiday self wales

The paper process is a closed loop so that the environment around the mill is protected. family holiday wales
The paper is whitened using chlorine-free bleaching techniques. holiday riding wales

Keeping up labour standards with our suppliersLonely Planet believes the people involved in producing our books should be well treated. There are shacks virtually on the airport site, even the cleaners in the airport beg for money, children are maimed to get better begging takings, and all of the swanky blocks from the airport into town are covered in black mould. Maintenance as a concept does not appear to exist in any Indian language. Bologna the best Italian city I returned there 20 years after my first visit could not believe the amount of graffitti. Posted Tuesday, October 16, 2007, 5:01 PM by Lonely Planet London s not all about shopping, exhibitions and partying. I was lucky enough to work voluntarily for Azafady for a few weeks in their Kilburn office. My job was to make their website more user-friendly. Or so I thought... holiday wales walking
On my arrival, Mark the director had me writing emails, answering the phone, posting voluntary positions on university websites, scanning applications, running to the post office, making tea and contributing to the madness that is the office of Azafady. You think London is glam Well Azafady s office is quite the opposite. And for good reason - 90% of the donations they receive go straight to Malagasy communities. family holiday wales

Blue sky bio-hazardPosted Wednesday, November 21, 2007, 7:17 PM by Lonely Planet Australia: blue skies, big open brown spaces, lots and lots of minerals and one, particularly nasty one... holiday in wales
Chrysotilewas once mined to make asbestos - a popular, cheap housing material used in Australia in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Now, it s widely known that asbestos is highly toxic and leads to nasty lung related diseases, including cancer. holiday wales
The mine site was in Wittenoom; a town by the same name servicing the workers of what was a booming industry. But since discovering the hazardous effects of asbestos, Wittenoom s been deserted. Situated in the Pilbara region in northern Western Australia the area still appeals to many travellers - and quite rightly. The gorges and waterfalls of nearby Karijini National Park are naturally spectacular. cottage holiday in wales
Iconic 80s Australian rock band, Midnight Oil released the album Blue Sky Mining in 1987, featuring a track, Blue Sky Mine which cut to the core of the mining industry and made Wittenoom infamous. Its lyrics still resonate with miners and their families who ve lobbied their incredibly wealthy ex-employers for justice and compensation to cover medical costs and damages. caravan holiday in wales
So I m caught at the junction still waiting for medicine The sweat of my brow keeps on feeding the engine Hope the crumbs in my pocket can keep me for another night... And the company takes what the company wants And nothing s as precious As a hole in the ground... Where as once curiosity may have seen you risk a side trip to Wittenoom it s no longer possible. It doesn t exist. It has been decommissioned, taken off the maps, the electricity - switched off. camping holiday wales
So if you re looking for somewhere to stay try the two campsites in Karijini National Park or the Auski Tourist Village on the Great Northern Highway And in an interesting aside, if the Labor party (currently in opposition) wins government at the Australian election this weekend, then ex-Oils frontman, Peter Garrett (member for Kingsford Smith) will be the new Minister for the Environment. It will be interesting to see if he stays true to his activist roots. accommodation holiday wales

On a family trip round Australia in the 80s, our car broke down in Wittenoom and we were stuck there for nearly a week. I loved the t-shirt I bought: Wittenoom is Gorge-ous . But the thing I remember most is Karinjini Gorge, mindblowingly beautiful even for a 13-year-old. holiday wales walking
Oh yeah, also, what anonymous said - PG has well-and-truly ditched activism. family holiday wales
I also went to Wittenoom with my family in the 80s. We visited the mine and I was terrified that my dad was going to catch cancer because he found the deadly blue stuff so interesting and picked it up. Interesting place, a shame it s been shut down. holiday riding wales
As for the Karijini - I ve been back since and it lived up to all of my memories. Definitely one of the most beautiful places in Australia. adventure holiday wales
I now live in Wittenoom and have read all the Government and scientific reports which show that there is minimal risk to humans in the town now that the mine has ceased operations. This beautiful place needs now to be cleaned up by responsible Governments so that future generations can enjoy this piece of paradise. But Governments are dancing to mining companies tunes who want to mine this region, so Garrett time you vocalised the truth and conservation is what is needed here not blind ignorance and lies. holiday park south wales
Welcome to paradise... my Eden. cottage holiday wales

Bubbles at High SpeedPosted Thursday, November 22, 2007, 2:31 PM by Lonely Planet Unless they ve been on the moon for the last year no Londoner could have escaped the hype and publicity surrounding the launch of Eurostar s first carbon neutral service from its new home at St Pancras International on Wednesday 14th November 2007. holiday wales
Not being able to turn down the chance of being whisked off to Paris for the day, we jumped at Eurostar s invitation to join other Green Pioneers on its first service and test out the super fast way of getting over to magical Paris. Plus, Eurostar offset all their carbon emissions, so apart from the (large) chocolate bar we shared on the train over, the trip was practically guilt-free. cottage holiday in wales
We excitedly checked in at the recently refurbished and renamed St Pancras International station, which has been fully restored to house the 400-metre-long Eurostar trains. With a crowd of media and trainspotters looking on the 11.07am train pulled away from its glorious new home on the first ever 186mph (that s a whopping 300kph) Eurostar to Paris. As we sped to Paris s Gard Du Nord we watched the blurred scenery rush by before descending into the Channel Tunnel for the 20 minutes stretch under the English Channel. The buffet car was a disappointment - we would have to take out a small loan to purchase a few snacks to see us through the journey. As we emerged from the Tunnel there was a good old British round of applause, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, although this could have had something to do with the free champagne. caravan holiday in wales

monebaggasseI sincerely appreciate your comment about traveling with a smaller impact or footprint. It's been on my mind a great deal lately as I plan future trips, from the impact on climate change of my plane trip, to the influence tourism has on the communities I visit. It's be great for Lonely Planet to do more education to travelers about how we can reduce our impacts, though your own site and through other media outlets. Thanks!
