Live Volcanoes and Hot Blue Marlin

As darkness fell upon our tranquil anchorage in the lee of Epi Island, our attention focused on a strange fiery glow in the eastern sky. Active volcanoes are numerous throughout Vanuatu's sprawling archipelago, and nearby Lopevi Island has the most spectacular and troublesome mountain in the region. It climbs out of the ocean like a giant 4,000-foot pyramid and its fiery beauty provides an absolutely breathtaking vista.

Holiday In Wales Sleep came easily after a long day's fishing, and with the morning light a fresh aroma lingered in the air from the fertile tropical jungles close by. A light zephyr barely disturbed the calm anchorage and even the deep offshore waters looked flat and still. By the time we had the outriggers down and four large TopGun lures clipped to the 130-pound outfits, we were already fishing in 500 fathoms.

Williamsburg area has a diverse menu of fishing opportunities. Local reservoirs are home to large mouth bass, chain pickerel, land locked striped bass, crappie, channel catfish, and a variety of pan fish. The Chickohominy River is a hot spot for large mouth bass fishing with many tournaments held there each year. Salt water fishing is available at piers from Yorktown to Virginia Beach. Ocean species are available by charter boat wreck fishing and Gulf Stream trips for Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Tuna, Dolphin and Shark are available out of Virginia Beach.

Holiday Wales Our adventure started from the island of Port Vila and we fished our way north for two days before reaching the western side of Pentecost, an island where few, if any, game boats have ever fished. Ocean Blue's recent purchase of the fully rigged, 40-foot Australian-built Blackwatch, Bolero, brought a live-aboard base to one of the last truly unfished areas of the world, making this dream trip a reality for all who care to make the journey.

The full moon has the blue water fishing a bit on the slow side, but a few people were surprised by the huge blue marlin making another show this summer. Adan, on the panga Gitana II, 20 in the morning having caught and released a sailfish and an estimated 450 pound blue marlin. The client was worn out and had enough for the day.

Previously, tourism to Guatemala had been stunted by violence. Tourism officials, hoteliers and tour guides, however, say the situation has improved since the election of a new government in 2003 that pledged to make tourism — and tourist safety — a priority. The government added more police around major sites such as Pacaya Volcano and along major highways.

Camping Holiday Wales Like most of these pretty islands in the South Pacific, Pentecost's deep cobalt waters butt up against the reef and we found yellowfin tuna smashing small baitfish just 200 yards from the drop-off. Hungry and eager for the big lures in our spread, the tunas put a bend in all four bent-butt rods and line rattled off the reels simultaneously. The deckie worked overtime as we tagged and released all but the smallest 10-pounder, which we soon bridled up on a Mustad 14/0 Southern Tuna hook. The flash of a big wahoo carved up the live bait the second it hit the water.

Not much in the way of Marlin either tho guests and captains report often seeing many finning fish who have no interest in the pitched live bait.

Accommodation Holiday Wales With our little livey chopped to shreds, we went back to our lure pattern, circling wide of the vast tuna schools to avoid another ambush. Light-tackle tuna fishing would have been exceptionally good among the schools of tuna up to 100 pounds or so, but we had blue marlin firmly set in our sights. My thoughts had just begun to wander back to the solid blues we had encountered off these lee-shore islands last year when the snap of a rubber band jolted me back to reality.

Holiday Last Minute Wales With lightning speed, a 550-pound blue inhaled the short rigger lure and stripped off line like the reel was in free-spool. These acrobatic blues pull exceptionally hard even in these warm Pacific waters, and it took over 25 minutes to get a tag in the fish and send it on its way. There was a buzz in the cockpit as we reset the tackle, the anticipation of another strike pumping adrenaline through our veins.

Catering Holiday Self Wales That chemical reaction repeated itself time and again during our seven-day charter aboard Bolero, as we averaged around three shots on marlin a day and the lures withstood frequent attacks by barracuda, wahoo, dogtooth and yellowfin tuna and the odd sail and shortbilled spearfish. Although we didn't see a blue marlin in excess of 750 pounds, we certainly came prepared for one. Big gear for big game pretty much sums up the mindset in these tropical waters and there's every reason to be prepared for a big girl. Although some very big blues frequent the area - commercial vessels report taking many fish over 1,000 pounds - the landing of a grander by a game-fishing boat on regulation tackle still eludes local anglers.

Family Holiday Wales Due to its proximity to Australia and its year-round marlin fishery, Vanuatu is fast becoming one of the most popular fishing destinations for those who live Down Under. Fishing for blue marlin stays good all year long, but from November through April catch rates increase and boats average at least one blue marlin release per day. But as the blue marlin fishing slows slightly from May through October, sails move in to take up the slack. Add to that abundant populations of black and striped marlin, yellowfin tuna, wahoo and the ferocious-looking dogtooth tuna and you have the makings of an angler's paradise.

Holiday Riding Wales Until just recently, most of the game fishing took place around the seamounts and a series of FADs (fish aggregating devices) near the island of Efate, the capital of Vanuatu. Ocean Blue built a successful business running a couple of 34-foot Blackwatches for the last few years, and these vessels served the purpose for day trips and the occasional overnight stay at some of the closer islands.

The anchorages around all of these islands tend to be quite comfortable, but an occasional wind shift associated with a tropical thunderstorm can bring about brief choppy conditions.
