Weight Gain May Spell Trouble for Heart Failure Patients Related Categories To This News Story Heart Supplements Weight Loss Supplements View More Health Stories Weight Gain May Spell Trouble for Heart Failure Patients

TUESDAY, Sept. 11 (HealthDay News) -- Short-term weight gain can signal worsening outcomes for heart failure patients, a new study shows. holiday wales

Patients who gain as little as two pounds over the course of a few weeks may require hospitalization within the month, according to heart researchers. Heart failure patients who gain more than 10 pounds are eight times more likely than heart failure patients with stable weights to need hospitalization. cottage holiday in wales

Heart failure occurs when the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body s needs. Heart defects, high blood pressure, scarring from previous heart attacks and coronary artery disease can all lead to heart failure. caravan holiday in wales

The study, published in the Sept. 11 issue of Circulation suggests that patients and their doctors may have several days or even weeks to control weight gain and avoid hospitalizations. The Yale University research team analyzed weight data and hospitalization records from 268 heart failure patients who were weighing themselves daily as part of a disease management program. The average age of the patients was 74. The researchers compared the data from half of the patients who were hospitalized with the half who were not. camping holiday wales

The analysis showed that the hospitalized patients had gained more weight than their peers in the month before hospitalization. In the week before hospitalization, weight increased rapidly. Doctors have known for some time that weight increase may be a sign of worsening heart failure, but the impact of the timing and amount of weight gain on hospitalization has not been studied before, the researchers said. accommodation holiday wales

We found that even small amounts of weight gain -- as small as just over two pounds -- predict hospitalization, lead author Dr. Sarwat Chaudhry, assistant professor of medicine at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn., said in a prepared statement. We found that weight gain starts well before hospitalization, giving doctors and patients at least a few days to take steps to avoid the need for hospitalization. holiday last minute wales

People who gained an average of two to five pounds in the week before hospitalization were almost 3 times more likely to need hospitalization than heart failure patients with stable weight. Those who gained five to 10 pounds were 4.5 times more likely to need hospitalization, and those who gained over 10 pounds were almost eight times more likely to require hospitalization for heart failure. catering holiday self wales

Heart failure is the most common reason for hospitalization among Americans, and more Medicare dollars are spent for heart failure than for any other diagnosis, Chaudhry said. Our data suggest that a simple bathroom scale could empower patients in managing their own disease and alert their physicians to early signs of heart failure decompensation (the failure of the heart to maintain adequate blood circulation). Ultimately, our data may help change the standard of care to prevent patients from being hospitalized, improve their quality of life and save precious health care resources. holiday wales walking

The researchers noted that not all hospitalizations for heart failure occur after weight gain, but that monitoring weight daily can help patients with heart failure. The team is currently conducting a clinical trial to test whether daily weight measurement can help reduce rates of hospitalization for heart failure patients. family holiday wales

Here are some of the latest health and medical news developments, compiled by editors of HealthDay: Painful Mosquito-Borne Virus Confirmed in Northern Italy While U.S. health professionals work to prevent outbreaks of the sometimes fatal West Nile virus, Europe now has a confirmed outbreak of another mosquito-borne illness, this one called chikungunya. holiday riding wales

According to BBC News, 160 cases of chikungunya, which is caused by a mosquito bite, have been confirmed in northern Italy in the villages of Castiglione di Ravenna and Castiglione di Cervia. The name chikungunya is derived from Swahili, meaning that which bends up, the BBC reports, because most of the symptoms are arthritic-type and leave victims stooped over. While not often fatal, chikungunya is quite painful and can persist for several weeks or months, similar to the way Lyme Disease affects Americans. But Lyme disease, usually caused by a deer tick bite, is bacterial and can be treated with antibiotics. This is ineffective for chikungunya, which is caused by a virus. adventure holiday wales

European medical authorities are warning travelers in Italy to take extra mosquito protection measures, including repellent spray, and health officials in the affected area say steps have been taken to reduce the mosquito population, according to the BBC reports. There is no vaccination to protect against chikungunya, the BBC added. holiday park south wales

----- U.S. Dog Population Now Rabies-Free, Government Says Although rabies is still found in North American wild animals, there have been no reported cases of canine rabies in the United States this year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. Commemorating Sept. 7 as World Rabies Day in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO) and a number of other groups, the CDC formally declared rabies as having been eliminated in the U.S. dog population. cottage holiday wales

The elimination of canine rabies in the United States represents one of the major public health success stories in the last 50 years, Dr. Charles Rupprecht, Chief of the CDC Rabies Program, said in an agency news release. holiday in wales

There are still at least 55, 000 rabies deaths worldwide every year, the CDC says. The last death reported in the United States was in 2006, when a Wisconsin teenager was bitten by a bat and didn t receive the rabies treatment inoculation in time. holiday wales

Tamoxifen Helps Treat Bipolar Disorder Discovery may lead to new drug to treat manic phase of the illness, study says. Read all this and more from eVitamins. Related Categories To This News Story Natural Cancer Supplements View More Health Stories Tamoxifen Helps Treat Bipolar Disorder

Tamoxifen Helps Treat Bipolar Disorder By Kathleen Doheny HealthDay Reporter WEDNESDAY, Sept. 12 (HealthDay News) -- The breast cancer drug tamoxifen helps control the manic phase of bipolar disorder, and works faster than many standard medications used to treat the chronic mental illness, a new study has found. cottage holiday in wales

One of the problems with existing treatments for bipolar disorder is they seem to have this long period before they start to work, explained Dr. Husseini K. Manji, senior study author and director of the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health s mood and anxiety disorders program. caravan holiday in wales

Current treatments sometimes take weeks to become effective, Manji said. And that obviously creates a huge problem, he said. When patients are in the manic phase, particularly, not getting relief fast enough from medication may mean they need to be hospitalized, he noted. camping holiday wales

For the study, Manji and his colleagues gave eight patients experiencing a manic episode tamoxifen, while another eight received a placebo; no one knew which drug they were getting. After three weeks, 63 percent of those on tamoxifen had reduced symptoms of mania, compared to just 13 percent of those on a placebo. The tamoxifen group responded by the fifth day of treatment. accommodation holiday wales

The study results are published online in the September issue of Bipolar Disorders. Manji and his colleagues decided to study tamoxifen because they knew that standard medications used to treat mania are known to lower the activity of an enzyme called protein kinase C, or PKC, that regulates activities in brain cells. This enzyme is believed to become overactive when bipolar disorder patients experience a manic episode. holiday last minute wales

Tamoxifen also blocks PKC, but does it more directly than some bipolar drugs, according to the researchers. Manji and his team made the discovery after years of searching for the correct cellular target to treat bipolar disorder, which affects almost 6 million American adults. Symptoms can be disabling, including profound mood swings, from depression to the manic phase, during which people can become overly excited and energetic but also irritable, before they plunge into depression again. catering holiday self wales

For the study, Manji said, we started with 20 milligrams [of tamoxifen] a day. It was increased each day, usually up to 100 milligrams a day. Literally at day five we saw this significant anti-mania effect, he said, adding that with standard medications it would have taken three weeks to see results. holiday wales walking

If we had something that would nip mania in the bud, it might save people from being hospitalized and getting sedating agents, Manji said. A new bipolar drug would not be tamoxifen itself, he said, but rather another medicine that mimics what tamoxifen does in the brain. The development of such a drug would probably take at least five years before it could be approved for marketing, he said. Dr. Gary S. Sachs, director of the bipolar clinic and research program at Massachusetts General Hospital and associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, called the results encouraging. family holiday wales

Sachs said he was aware of other research with similar findings. I wouldn t say this study proves that tamoxifen works faster than standard [treatment, ] he said, since a head-to-head comparison was not done. But, while not definitive, the study has important findings, he said. holiday riding wales

WEDNESDAY, Sept. 12 (HealthDay News) -- People who consume high levels of the yellow plant pigments lutein and zeaxanthin may have a reduced risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of irreversible blindness among the elderly. holiday park south wales

The Age-Related Eye Disease Study Research Group study, supported by the U.S. government, looked at more than 4, 500 people who were between the ages of 60 and 80 when they were enrolled between 1992 and 1998. cottage holiday wales

Those who consumed the highest levels of lutein and zeaxanthin -- found in yellow and dark leafy vegetables -- were significantly less likely than those who ate the lowest levels of these nutrients to have advanced AMD, the research team found. holiday in wales

People with the highest intake of lutein and zeaxanthin were also less likely to have large or numerous intermediate drusen, which are yellow or white deposits on the retina or optic nerve that are a sign of AMD. holiday wales

The study is published in the September issue of the journal Archives of Ophthalmology. The researchers said lutein and zeaxanthin may affect processes through which light and oxygen damage the eyes. If further research confirms the findings of this study, lutein and zeaxanthin may be considered as useful agents in food or supplement-based interventions designed to reduce the risk of AMD, the authors concluded. cottage holiday in wales

U.S. Life Expectancy Hits New High Drops in deaths from heart disease, cancer and stroke fuel the trend. Read all this and more from eVitamins. Related Categories To This News Story View More Health Stories U.S. Life Expectancy Hits New High

U.S. Life Expectancy Hits New High By Steven Reinberg HealthDay Reporter WEDNESDAY, Sept. 12 (HealthDay News) -- Life expectancy rates in the United States are at an all-time high, with people born in 2005 projected to live for nearly 78 years, a new federal study finds. caravan holiday in wales

The finding reflects a continuing trend of increasing life expectancy that began in 1955, when the average American lived to be 69.6 years old. By 1995, life expectancy was 75.8 years, and by 2005, it had risen to 77.9 years, according to the report, released Wednesday. camping holiday wales

This is good news, said report co-author Donna Hoyert, a health scientist at the National Center for Health Statistics. It s even better news that it is a continuation of trends, so it is a long period of continuing improvement. accommodation holiday wales

Despite the upward trend, the United States still has a lower life expectancy than some 40 other countries, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The country with the longest life expectancy is Andorra at 83.5 years, followed by Japan, Macau, San Marino and Singapore. holiday last minute wales

Much of the increase owes to declining death rates from the three leading causes of death in the country -- heart disease, cancer and stroke. In addition, in 2005, the U.S. death rate dropped to an all time low of less than 800 deaths per 100, 000. Yet mortality for Alzheimer s disease and Parkinson s disease continue to increase, Hoyert said. Hoyert also noted that women continue to outlive men. The difference in 2005 was 5.2 years. This is the same as in 2004, she said. But it s at the lowest level it has been at since 1946. catering holiday self wales

Racial disparities in death rates continue to exist. According to the report, life expectancy in 2005 for whites was 78.3, which was unchanged from 2004. For blacks, life expectancy was 73.2 years in 2005, up from 73.1 years in 2004. holiday wales walking

And, the infant mortality rate increased from 6.79 per 1, 000 births in 2004 to 6.89 in 2005. However, this increase was not considered statistically significant. The leading causes of infant death are birth defects, complications from preterm birth and low birth weight. The third leading cause of infant death in the United States is sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). family holiday wales

The death rate from heart disease dropped from 217 deaths per 100, 000 in 2004 to 210.3 in 2005. The death rate from cancer fell from 185.8 deaths per 100, 000 in 2004 to 183.8 in 2005. And the death rate from stroke fell from 50 deaths per 100, 000 in 2004 to 46.6 in 2005, according to the report. holiday riding wales

These declines are due to medical advances, some improvements in lifestyle, and screening and diagnosis, Hoyert said. However, deaths from Alzheimer s disease and Parkinson s disease increased by about 5 percent between 2004 and 2005. Factors that contributed to increasing rates of death from Alzheimer s and Parkinson s include the aging population, Hoyert said. There is also better diagnosis and reporting of these diseases on death certificates, she said. adventure holiday wales

Hoyert said she expects the steady increase in life expectancy to continue. The report, prepared by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s National Center for Health Statistics, is titled Deaths: Preliminary Data for 2005. It s based on about 99 percent of death records reported in all states for 2005. S. Jay Olshansky, a professor of public health and senior research scientist at the University of Illinois Center on Aging, called the report s findings excellent news. holiday park south wales

Whenever death rates from the three major killer diseases decline, the next question to ask is whether the additional survival time is healthy or unhealthy, he said. I look forward to the additional analyses that reveal the answer to this question. cottage holiday wales

It is my hope that healthy life expectancy continues to rise, but it is important to remember that what is being reported is period life expectancy at birth. This figure cannot reflect how the health status of younger cohorts will be expressed in subsequent years, Olshansky said. holiday in wales

Better Lupus Treatments on the Horizon By Alan Mozes HealthDay Reporter FRIDAY, Sept. 28 (HealthDay News) -- High-tech research into better, safer ways to treat the autoimmune disease lupus is building up steam, a group of scientists report. caravan holiday in wales

Striking an upbeat tone, researchers from across the United States spoke at a teleconference Tuesday hosted by the Lupus Research Institute (LRI) of the improving outlook for patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. camping holiday wales

Today, we do have therapies that work, conference moderator Dr. Lee Simon, an associate clinical professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, said. So, while in the 1950s, 95 percent of people were dead within five years of diagnosis, today, 95 percent of patients survive five years out. But the treatments we have carry a heavy toxic burden. So, we need new drugs that work as well, if not better, with less harsh side effects. accommodation holiday wales

Today, I m incredibly excited, added Simon, who has also served as a division director for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. We are now in a period of time when the development of molecular technology has given us the tools to dissect and tease out some aspects of the disease and identify biomarkers. That means that where previously we tended to treat the symptoms of patients, now we re trying to treat what actually drives the disease, he said. holiday last minute wales

Other researchers included in the teleconference hailed from the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of Chicago, Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke s Medical Center (RPSLMC), and the Salk Institute of Biological Studies. catering holiday self wales

Lupus is a chronic and sometimes fatal autoimmune disease that affects upwards of 1.5 million Americans, according to LRI figures. The disease usually strikes between the ages of 15 and 44, with 90 percent of patients being women. Hispanic, Asian and Native American women appear to have a higher risk of developing the disease, while blacks seem to face both a higher risk and a more severe prognosis once diagnosed. holiday wales walking

The incurable and often-disabling condition strikes different patients in differing ways, making it difficult to screen and diagnosis. Lupus involves a hyperactive immune system that assaults otherwise healthy organs, such as the kidney, brain, heart, lungs and skin, as well as joints and blood. family holiday wales

According to Simon, patients typically experience fatigue and a general malaise, while further plagued by skin rashes and sensitivity to sunlight. Arthritis affects 90 percent of lupus patients, while 50 percent face serious kidney disease. Alongside respiratory complications, as many as one-third of patients develop cardiovascular complications. holiday riding wales

The current standard of treatment typically involves nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), anti-malarials and steroids. Immunosuppressive medications -- such as azathioprine and cyclosporine -- are also used to dampen an immune system gone haywire. However, such regimens, while effective, can provoke severe side effects. Conference attendees said that, until very recently, doctors and patients have been stuck in a treatment rut that has left them with few alternative prospects by way of treatment development. adventure holiday wales

There hasn t been a new therapy approved for the treatment of lupus in over 40 years, Dr. Robert S. Katz, a rheumatologist with RPSLMC, said during the teleconference. The problem, noted Simon, is that for many years, lupus was handled like an orphan disease, with the pharmaceutical industry largely ignoring it because of its relative rarity and the fear of not making a profitable return on drug-development costs. holiday park south wales

This, despite the fact that more Americans are diagnosed with lupus than with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, sickle-cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, or AIDS, LRI statistics indicate. But the lupus research scene has undergone a renaissance, the experts said. It s a horse race, Katz said. There are now 27 drug companies that are working on new lupus medicine. And the new therapies are more targeted therapies. They re not immune tranquilizers. cottage holiday wales

In fact, a new lupus information Web site -- established by the LRI this past May -- highlights 15 research trials that are currently under way. Many of the studies are for effective drugs with fewer side effects. holiday in wales

I think one of the reasons that there is a measure of excitement in lupus and in other complex diseases that we ve been confronted with for a long time is the advent of a whole series of new molecular tools that allow us to address basic issues, Salk molecular neurobiology professor Greg E. Lemke told reporters. holiday wales

He pointed especially to the sequencing of the human genome and the use of genetically altered animal models as innovations that are boosting lupus research. In one innovation, researchers led by Philip Low, of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., say they ve developed what could be a vaccine against lupus. Reporting in the Sept./Oct. issue of Molecular Pharmaceutics, the team said the shot reduced disease, cut down on kidney damage and extended the survival of laboratory mice with the illness. cottage holiday in wales

This and other new research is raising expectations, the researchers said. Our goal should be trying to get remission in patients with lupus, UCLA s Dr. Bevra Hahn, chief of rheumatology in the School of Medicine, noted during the teleconference. Patients all tend to accept what I call simmering disease. There is fatigue, the patient never feels good, but they re not in danger, and we accept that as OK. I think it s time for both people who have the disease and physicians who treat them to do better. caravan holiday in wales

Everyone agreed that heeding this advice will require an enormous public support --both in terms of continued financial investment and in enrolling patients in clinical trials. The optimism is there, however. I m a rheumatologist by training, and I ve been seeing patients since 1978, Simon said. And I m much, much more encouraged than in the past about where we re heading. It s a very exciting time. The confluence of science, technology, and patient advocacy will allow all this to move forward. camping holiday wales

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 3 (HealthDay News) -- Underlying anxiety, pain and other behavioral or medical problems can help prompt dogs to bite children, a new study suggests. camping holiday wales

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania looked at 111 cases involving 103 dogs that bit children and were referred to a veterinary behavior clinic over four years. Guarding of resources and territory were the most common triggers for aggression by these dogs, according to the study in the journal Injury Prevention. One in five of the dogs had never bitten a person before, and two-thirds of them had never bitten a child before. accommodation holiday wales

The study found that young children were much more likely to be bitten when a dog felt their food or other items, such as a toy, were under threat. In cases involving older children, the bite was more likely the result of a dog s territorial behavior. holiday last minute wales

Food guarding was the most common cause of bites involving children familiar to the dog, while territorial guarding was the most likely cause in cases involving unfamiliar children. The study also found that three-quarters of the dogs exhibited anxiety when left by their owners or when exposed to loud noises such as fireworks or thunderstorms. The authors said demonstrable fear in dogs may signal a tendency to bite when the dogs are confronted with a perceived threat. catering holiday self wales

The researchers noted that young children can be noisy and unpredictable in their movements, both of which may frighten an already anxious dog. Half of the dogs in the study had medical conditions, mostly affecting their skin or bones. Other health issues included growths, eye problems, liver and kidney disease, hormonal problems and infections. Pain may have been a factor in some of the dog bite cases, the authors said. holiday wales walking

FRIDAY, Oct. 5 (HealthDay News) -- U.S. researchers say they ve identified a specific immune deficiency that s the likely cause of ulcerative colitis -- at least in mice. family holiday wales

A team at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) said the problem may lie in a deficiency of the T-bet protein in dendritic cells -- white blood cells that detect foreign microbes and activate the immune system. holiday riding wales

The lack of T-bet allows harmful bacteria in the large intestine to breach the bowel s protective lining and trigger damaging inflammation, the researchers said. They also found that once the disease was established in mice, it could be passed from mothers to offspring and even between adults, a discovery that has potential implications for public health and prevention. adventure holiday wales

The study was published online Thursday in the journal Cell. We have identified a new molecular player, T-bet, and when it s missing, there is spontaneous onset of the disease in mice. The importance of this study is that we now have a novel model for ulcerative colitis; the disease appears in 100 percent of the animals (that lack T-bet) and looks just like the human disease, team leader Laurie Glimcher, a professor of immunology at HSPH and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, said in a prepared statement. holiday park south wales
