Blenheim Palace is a magnificent baroque palace, the birthplace and childhood home of Sir Winston Churchill and the home of the 11th Duke of Marlborough. The Blenheim Palace name derives from a decisive battle where the first Duke of Marlborough, John Churchill, won a great allied victory over the forces of Louis XIV, saving Europe from French domination. To thank him, Queen Anne vowed to build Marlborough a home called Blenheim. However, it soon became the subject of political infighting, and the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough had to pay for what remained to be built at their own expense. caravan holiday in wales

Edinburgh Castle Visit Edinburgh Castle with the Great British Heritage Pass Family Pass 15 day Family Pass 30 day Great British Heritage Pass properties Great British Heritage Pass properties Buy Now Edinburgh Castle GO BACK Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle, an impressive fortress and one of Scotland s best loved sightseeing attractions, sits atop an extinct volcano overlooking the capital city of Scotland. Castles are always popular with tourists using the Great British Heritage Pass, but Edinburgh Castle is amongst the favourites. It dominates Edinburgh s skyline and offers stunning views of the city, not to mention a great insight into Scottish heritage. catering holiday self wales

Edinburgh Castle has much to explore and discover. You can visit St. Margaret s Chapel, which is Edinburgh s oldest building and dates back to the 1100s. Crown Square was the principal courtyard developed in the 15th century. Also see the Great Hall, built by James IV, and admire its impressive hammerbeam roof, and the Scottish National War Memorial, added after World War I. holiday wales walking

The most notable of these prisoners was Charles I, who arrived there in November 1647. Charles tried to escape twice, but failed both times, and remained at Carisbrooke Castle for just under a year. He was housed there until September 1648, just five months before he was executed in Whitehall. family holiday wales

Carisbrooke Castle was used as the official residence for the resident governor up until 1944, when Princess Beatrice last resident governor died. Now it is owned by English Heritage and is used strictly as a monument and tourist attraction. holiday riding wales

It is also home to the Carisbrooke Castle Museum, as well as the rather unusual team of donkeys used to operate the tread wheel in the 16th century wellhouse. Dover Castle and the Secret Wartime Tunnels Visit Dover Castle for FREE with the Great British Heritage Pass Family Pass 15 day Family Pass 30 day Great British Heritage Pass properties Great British Heritage Pass properties Buy Now Dover Castle and the Secret Wartime Tunnels GO BACK Dover Castle

Dover Castle is situated in Kent and has played a key role in the history of England. This castle has often been described as the ey to England due to its important defensive role that it has played throughout history. cottage holiday wales

Parts of Dover Castle were thought to be started around the Iron Age, if not earlier, but it was during the reign of Henry II that most of the castle actually took shape. Both the inner and outer baileys as well as the keep were built during this time. This was one of the last rectangular keeps ever built. holiday in wales

Dover Castle first came under siege in 1216 by a group of rebel barons from France. They breached the walls, but were ultimately unsuccessful in taking the castle. Dover was taken by parliamentary trick during the English Civil War, so it avoided most of the ravaging suffered by other castles during the time. During the Napoleonic Wars, Dover Castle went through some major changes as extra defenses were added and underground barracks were constructed to house more soldiers. These were the only underground barracks ever built in Britain. holiday wales

The Secret Wartime Tunnels at Dover were of great importance during the Second World War. During this time, the tunnels were converted in an air-raid shelter and later into a military hospital and command centre. cottage holiday in wales

Today, Dover Castle and the Secret Wartime Tunnels are owned by English Heritage and a major tourist attraction in Britain. You can explore all the history of the castle and tunnels for free with the Great British Heritage Pass. caravan holiday in wales

The Osborne House was the favorite seaside home of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. You can visit this home of royalty as well as over 580 other attractions in England with the Great British Heritage Pass. accommodation holiday wales

The Osborne House estate was purchased in 1845, and the original house was torn down in order to erect a larger one more suitable for housing a royal family. This house was built mainly for the purpose of spending time with the family and children away from public life and distractions, but was still considered a royal residence and sometimes hosted affairs of the State. holiday last minute wales

When the new building was created, Prince Albert played a key role in its design. Prince Albert favored the style of Italian Renaissance, and is so apparent in the design and layout of the new Osborne House. The high ceilings and walls were ornately decorated and the Grand Corridor served as a sculpture gallery for the family. catering holiday self wales

After you explore all the rooms of Osborne House and enjoy the extravagant decorations, you can visit the museum that Osborne House offers. The museum is a pleasure to visit because it has such a wide variety of collections to enjoy. holiday wales walking

You can also enjoy the Victoria Fort and Albert Barracks, as well as stunning gardens that surround the manor. For an added treat, you can end your royal visit by taking a horse-drawn carriage to visit Swiss Cottage, where the royal children learned to cook. family holiday wales

It is one of four public gardens run by the RHS, and is one of the top three visited paid gardens in all of the United Kingdom, along with Kew Gardens and Alnwick. RHS Garden Wisley was founded in 1878 by RHS member George Ferguson Wilson. He purchased a 60 acre lot and called it the akwood Experimental Garden. After Wilson death in 1902, the property, along with the adjoining Glebe farm, was purchased by Sir Thomas Hanbury. He gifted them to the National Horticultural Society the following year. holiday park south wales

Since then RHS Garden Wisley has developed into 240 acres of diverse beauty. There are multiple formal and informal decorative gardens, a canal garden, and rock garden as well as an extensive arboretum and multiple glasshouses. Sissinghurst Castle Garden, located in the Weald of Kent is owned by the National Trust and thought to be among the very best gardens in all of England. holiday wales

In the middle ages, there was originally a manor house surrounded by a moat built on the Sissinghurst Castle Garden grounds. That building was torn down and replaced by a new manor house in the 15th century when the Baker family acquired the property. cottage holiday in wales

It stayed within the Baker family until the 17th century when the family collapsed. After that it was used for a variety of purposes, such as to hold prisoners-of-war during the Seven Years War, and as a Union Workhouse. caravan holiday in wales

Sissinghurst Castle was purchased in 1930 by Vita Sackville-West who, together with her husband Harold Nicholson, made in the grounds one of the most celebrated gardens in the world. Sissinghurst was one of the first large houses in Kent to be built of brick; the only portions that survive today are the service range and the central tower where Sackville-West had her study. The gardens of Sissinghurst Castle were designed as a series of outdoor themed rooms, the walls being hedges or the red brick ruins of the original castle buildings. The contrasting personalities of the romantic Sackville-West and the classical Nicholson are reflected in this most English of gardens. camping holiday wales
