State Grant To Help Stone Harbor Shore Up Bulkheads

Holiday In Wales The borough has been awarded a $750,000 state grant to replace deteriorating bulkheads on street ends along the bay.

"Preserving open space is a critical move in ensuring that New Jersey continues to provide a high quality of life for both its residents and visitors, " Gormley continued. "As a lawmaker representing the shore area, I understand the importance of keeping our state beautiful. Tourism adds billions of dollars to our state's economy every year, and the Jersey Shore is a vital component of our state' state tourism dollars."

Holiday Wales The grant, announced jointly by Mayor Suzanne Walters and state Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bradley Campbell, will pay three-quarters of the costs. The borough will pay the remaining $250,000.

In an effort to further move the project forward, the township has applied to the state Department of Transportation for a planning grant to help design the path. "We're awaiting word on that grant, " Perry said. If the township does receive the grant, 2002

Cottage Holiday In Wales Walters said the grant would allow the borough to do a decade of bulkhead construction all at once.

Caravan Holiday In Wales "We have a maintenance cycle. We usually do three to five a year. Then we heard about this grant where we can do a lot and they pay 75 percent. This is a 10-year project we're compressing into one year," Walters said on Monday.

Camping Holiday Wales The bulkheads are facing the bay on the ends of borough streets. Most are so old they are made with wood treated with creosote, which was banned years ago. The worst one, according to Walters, is at 95th Street where utility lines cross from the mainland onto the island. The bulkhead appears to be collapsing in spots.

Last week, Christie sued Stone Harbor, dumping 79, 250 cubic yards of spoils rather than the 65, and has been slow to test the material and remove it.

Accommodation Holiday Wales Specifications for the project are being worked on now by the engineering firm Remington & Vernick. Walters said the work would probably start in the spring.

Holiday Last Minute Wales The state is not only awarding money for the project, it is also lending a hand in design and the difficult permitting process.

Catering Holiday Self Wales "Our Bureau of Coastal Engineering will provide assistance with engineering review, submit all required state and Army Corps of Engineers permit applications, provide all administrative review, perform the bidding process and place a state inspector onsite from project commencement to conclusion," Campbell wrote in a letter to Walters.

Holiday Wales Walking The project also gives the borough a chance to increase the height of the bulkheads to prevent flooding. The older bulkheads do not always conform to the borough's zoning ordinance, which requires the wooden walls to be higher to prevent flooding.

Family Holiday Wales With sea levels rising, and the problems expected to worsen in the coming century, higher bulkheads could reduce flood damage from the bay side here on Seven-Mile Beach.

Holiday Riding Wales "The Borough Council has made shore protection and flood prevention top priorities for Stone Harbor. I am happy to be working closely with Commissioner and the state Department of Environmental Protection to bring funding from the state to the borough for these projects," Walters said.
