Shark Defense

In the May issue, you asked about ways of defending your catch against shark attack. Here's a tactic I have used to save big fish in an otherwise bleak situation.

Holiday In Wales On the West Coast, Pacific skipjack are commonly caught while trolling for tuna. Skipjack are not a particularly good foodfish, and most anglers release them. I will usually put a couple in the fish box solely for shark defense purposes. Large mackerel, small tuna, a tuna carcass or a tuna head will also work in a pinch.

The meat will instantly get the shark's attention. As the shark attempts to take the skipjack, pull the fish away. Drop it back in the water and then pull it away again. Try to keep the shark occupied while the angler works on his fish.
