Ofgem steps into smart meter debate

430013175 holiday park south wales

Week 1 - 03/02/2006

UK energy consumer watchdog Ofgem has launched a research pilot into the benefits and pitfalls of smart metering, in efforts to reduce prices for consumers and cut unnecessary consumption. cottage holiday wales

Over the next six months it will collaborate with various energy industry and consumer organisations to establish a clear picture on the feasibility of installing a smart meter in ever home. Sir John Mogg, chairman of Ofgem, said: We recognise that there are benefits to customers from using smart meters, but with the significant investment costs involved to deliver them, we need hard evidence to show how such benefits can be delivered. holiday in wales

He added: This is why Ofgem is powering the smart metering debate so we can separate the myths from the facts. We will be working with the industry and consumers to deliver a smarter future for the household energy meter. As opposed to current standard meters, many of which date to the 1960s, smart meters would be able to give precise usage readings in pounds and pence to show customers exactly how much energy was being consumed. holiday wales

Telewest and ntl results underline importance of triple play

430013833 caravan holiday in wales

Week 1 - 01/03/2006

The end of year results of recently merged telephone, TV and broadband suppliers ntl and Telewest, underline the importance of triple play according to Chris Williams, telecoms product manager at uSwitch.com. camping holiday wales

Triple play is the term used for companies supplying telephone, television and broadband services all over one single high-speed internet connection. Between the fourth quarter of 2004 and the fourth quarter of 2005 the delivery of triple play services increased by 27% for ntl and 42% for Telewest. Commenting, Mr Williams said: Telewest s and ntl s results have reinforced the pivotal role broadband continues to play for UK telecommunications companies, by emphasising the importance of triple play to customers. accommodation holiday wales

Around 70 per cent of Telewest customers have already been upgraded to high speed broadband connections which further suggest that triple play, quad play and bundled products are the number one priority for them as they cement their early lead on competitors. holiday last minute wales

One thing we hope consumers will see is a better service at competitive prices as broadband switching takes hold and the competition for triple play products increases. RBS reports rising profits and debt write-offs

430013178 family holiday wales

Week 1 - 01/03/2006

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) Group has reported record profits, despite its write-off of bad consumer debts increasing by 30% to .17 billion. holiday riding wales

Annual profits at the group rose by 21% to .9 billion. The groups retail and credit card divisions lost 24% of their profit to bad debt write-offs, however. The group s unsecured personal lending also continued to grow over 2005, up 10% to 3.3 billion. Once again, we are seeing the impact of the consumer credit boom of the last few years on the balance sheet of the second largest bank in the UK, said head of personal finance at uSwitch Nick White. adventure holiday wales

We must not forget that behind the numbers on the balance sheet lie the lives of thousands of people who are struggling to cope with the ever-increasing burden of debt. With consumer debt escalating to over .1 trillion in the UK, and the latest figures for credit card debt alone standing at 8.4 billion, there is an urgent need for a review of the lending practices employed by the high street banks, he added. holiday park south wales

Halifax to open 100 new branches

438002078 accommodation holiday wales

Week 1 - 01/03/2006

Halifax has announced a new branch opening programme, the biggest of its kind in the UK banking sector for many years. The bank said that the new branches would create around 1, 500 jobs and is the largest network expansion by the Halifax since the 1970s. holiday last minute wales

The expansion will take place in the south of England and means a new Halifax branch will open approximately every fortnight for the next five years. About 50 of the branches will be in towns where there has previously been little or no Halifax presence, while roughly another 50 will involve existing branches moving to bigger, better locations in the same towns. Halifax said the move underlines its commitment to achieving its medium term market share target of 15%-20% in all its core retail markets, especially current accounts, savings and investments. catering holiday self wales

According to research conducted by GFK NOP for the Halifax a convenient branch location is especially important for current account customers with 76% of customers using branches more likely to bank with a financial provider with conveniently located branches. holiday wales walking

Powergen announcement encourages reaction

430013175 holiday riding wales

Week 1 - 01/03/2006

Following yesterday s announcement that Powergen was increasing gas and electricity prices for residential customers by 24.4% and 18.4% respectively, uSwitch and gas and electricity watchdog energywatch have said that the news is a blow to Powergen customers. adventure holiday wales

The size of these rises is appalling and they are a staggering blow for Powergen customers, said Adam Scorer of energywatch. Powergen s price rise is a huge blow to their 5.5 million customers, and in percentage terms is the largest we have seen for gas prices this year, said Alan Tattersall, director of home services at uSwitch.com. holiday park south wales

Now that we have seen all of the major energy suppliers increase their prices in 2006, there is no excuse for customers not to review their current deal and make sure that they are not paying over the odds for their gas and electricity. This is of particular importance for those people who were already struggling to pay their bills, Mr Tattersall added. cottage holiday wales
