Matildas drew with Canada last night meaning they make it through to the quarters - the best result for Australian women s soccer ever. Hard to believe there was a typhoon threatening any part of the country. In Chengdu - where the game was played - it was 30 plus degrees celsius and the sun was shining brightly. holiday in wales

To Madagascar with love from LondonPosted Tuesday, October 16, 2007, 5:01 PM by Lonely Planet London s not all about shopping, exhibitions and partying. I was lucky enough to work voluntarily for Azafady for a few weeks in their Kilburn office. My job was to make their website more user-friendly. Or so I thought... caravan holiday in wales
On my arrival, Mark the director had me writing emails, answering the phone, posting voluntary positions on university websites, scanning applications, running to the post office, making tea and contributing to the madness that is the office of Azafady. You think London is glam Well Azafady s office is quite the opposite. And for good reason - 90% of the donations they receive go straight to Malagasy communities. camping holiday wales

Blue sky bio-hazardPosted Wednesday, November 21, 2007, 7:17 PM by Lonely Planet Australia: blue skies, big open brown spaces, lots and lots of minerals and one, particularly nasty one... family holiday wales
Chrysotilewas once mined to make asbestos - a popular, cheap housing material used in Australia in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Now, it s widely known that asbestos is highly toxic and leads to nasty lung related diseases, including cancer. holiday riding wales
The mine site was in Wittenoom; a town by the same name servicing the workers of what was a booming industry. But since discovering the hazardous effects of asbestos, Wittenoom s been deserted. Situated in the Pilbara region in northern Western Australia the area still appeals to many travellers - and quite rightly. The gorges and waterfalls of nearby Karijini National Park are naturally spectacular. adventure holiday wales
Iconic 80s Australian rock band, Midnight Oil released the album Blue Sky Mining in 1987, featuring a track, Blue Sky Mine which cut to the core of the mining industry and made Wittenoom infamous. Its lyrics still resonate with miners and their families who ve lobbied their incredibly wealthy ex-employers for justice and compensation to cover medical costs and damages. holiday park south wales
So I m caught at the junction still waiting for medicine The sweat of my brow keeps on feeding the engine Hope the crumbs in my pocket can keep me for another night... And the company takes what the company wants And nothing s as precious As a hole in the ground... Where as once curiosity may have seen you risk a side trip to Wittenoom it s no longer possible. It doesn t exist. It has been decommissioned, taken off the maps, the electricity - switched off. cottage holiday wales
So if you re looking for somewhere to stay try the two campsites in Karijini National Park or the Auski Tourist Village on the Great Northern Highway And in an interesting aside, if the Labor party (currently in opposition) wins government at the Australian election this weekend, then ex-Oils frontman, Peter Garrett (member for Kingsford Smith) will be the new Minister for the Environment. It will be interesting to see if he stays true to his activist roots. holiday in wales

There are shacks virtually on the airport site, even the cleaners in the airport beg for money, children are maimed to get better begging takings, and all of the swanky blocks from the airport into town are covered in black mould. Our resident Lonely Planet film buff Ghita just back from Rotterdam Loebenstein says don t miss Red Road an exceptional and artfully constructed psychological thriller. She also gives props to Fresh Air, a charming Hungarian film about a stuffy mother-daughter relationship and Syndromes and a Century, an enchanting Thai film that twists itself ever so slightly into peculiar and almost mythical forms. For a bit of Icelandic action Children and Parents lends a minimalist lens to the intertwining relationships between a set of children and parents. cottage holiday wales

Thai-ing up loose endsPosted Tuesday, June 05, 2007, 5:21 PM by Lonely Planet I recently spent two-and-a-half-months traversing the length and breadth of Thailand while on assignment for Lonely Planet. Yes, it was one of the most unique experiences of my journalistic career. But here s a nasty surprise for all you aspiring guidebook writers out there: Vast stretches of my work week were often mind-numbingly dull. Nevertheless, I still managed to acquire a few priceless nuggets of international knowledge along the way, some of which you, dear reader, are about to become the lucky beneficiary. holiday wales
1. Sex tourists are often good for a laughIn the majority of Thailand s most infamous red-lights districts, such as Bangkok s Patpong, it s actually quite likely you ll encounter a greater number of camera-toting tourists than the Dirty Old Men of Southeast Asian lore. Interested in taking a disturbing go-go bar field trip you ll be able to dine out on back home If so, pay a visit to the popular-again Bangkok alley known as Soi Cowboy, or to its nearby neighbour, a building known as Nana Plaza. Both are located in Sukhumvit. cottage holiday in wales
2. Osama bin Laden has been fully embraced by the free marketThis one is weird. I first noticed the trend three years ago in Malaysia, where I saw a pre-teen boy in a day market wearing an Osama T-shirt. In Thailand, I spotted Osama masks, stickers, posters and banners. 3. The dark side of the Full Moon Party (and I m not talking about the overdoses) The legendary dance party, which takes place on Ko Pha-Ngan whenever the moon is full, has been a famed backpacker milestone for years. Yet travellers have lately been expiring during the FMP at a surprisingly rapid clip. In April, an Israeli tourist was stabbed to death during a bar fight. In early 2005, an overloaded Samui-bound speedboat capsized, leaving seven dead. And what s up with all those drunk people napping in the ocean ! Please, friends: Look alive out there, kay caravan holiday in wales
4. In Thailand, train travel is freeOkay, not really. But it s mighty close! I beg of you, Thailand-bound backpacker: Get off the VIP bus circuit at least once during your journey, head to the nearest train station, and go somewhere. Anywhere. Just like travelling in Thailand, the journey will be a ride you ll not soon forget. Dan Eldridge has just finished researching the Thailand chapter for Lonely Planet s Southeast Asia on a shoestring. He s now heading home for a nice cup of tea. camping holiday wales

Loving the alienPosted Sunday, June 03, 2007, 5:18 PM by Lonely Planet Otherworldly aliens dwell among us, at least in Roswell s many souvenir shops. If you ve ever thrilled to The X-Files, the incident at Roswell, New Mexico is already filed away in your top secret memory banks. In 1947, as Cold War hysteria sent Americans into a tongue-tied tizzy, a mysterious object crashed at a nearby ranch. No one would have skipped any sleep over it, but the military made a big to-do of hushing it up, and for a lot of folks, that sealed it. The aliens had landed! holiday last minute wales
International curiosity and local ingenuity have transformed the small city into a thriving extraterrestrial-wannabe zone. Downtown, bulbous white heads glow atop the street lamps, a fast-food chain takes the shape of a celestial spacecraft and the windows of the local music store have little space-dudes jamming on electric guitars. Inside the popular UFO Museum, pale elongated beings with huge eye sockets turn up everywhere. Aliens pop out of Christmas stockings in the gift shop and a huge silver-sequined flying saucer could be a back-up disco ball for the galactic in crowd. catering holiday self wales
The crash heard round the world has even given the city a new logo- a spaceship with an outer space-friendly slogan: Visitors welcome. Beth Kohn is hovering through the Southwest States researching the USA guidebook. Alas, Beth didn t see any flying saucers, but stay tuned - next stop Earthship, Taos. holiday wales walking

As passionate travellers, we want to give something back to the incredible places that have inspired us for so many years. The charities we support are based mainly in the developing world, and focus first and foremost on health and education and secondarily on conservation and environmentalism. We also support projects that foster the positive attributes of tourism and the respectful preservation of tourist areas and the environment. After all, we want these spectacular sites to be around to enjoy for a long time to come. holiday riding wales

My problem is getting from Pakistan to Kyrgyzstan. I ve heard that it s much easier to fly to Almaty than to Bishkek, but I ll take either, really. I m wondering if someone can help me figure how to fly from Islamabad (or Lahore if need be) to either Almaty or Bishkek. monebaggasseI sincerely appreciate your comment about traveling with a smaller impact or footprint. It's been on my mind a great deal lately as I plan future trips, from the impact on climate change of my plane trip, to the influence tourism has on the communities I visit. It's be great for Lonely Planet to do more education to travelers about how we can reduce our impacts, though your own site and through other media outlets. Thanks!
