Mr Duhig, deputy chairman of the parish council and a former horticulture college student, runs the village shop at Clenchwarton. Over the past 12 years, his garden has four times won the prize for best large plot in the village s garden competition. He thinks it s unlikely the culprit is a jealous rival: The person responsible must have wanted to get at us. I have my suspicions, but I do not want to say anything. family holiday wales

Bill and Ben are Back!

The long-awaited moment has arrived. This afternoon at 3.45pm on BBC1 old favourites Bill and Ben make their return to terrestrial tv. The puppets, with their flowerpot bodies and best friend Little Weed, have been brought into the 21st century. Now animated, rather than suspended on strings, they ve got new songs and new friends, but they re hearteningly just the same in character.... Check it out! holiday riding wales

Moorland Closed to Public UK Greenfingers Moorland Closed to Public: UK gardening tips advice on Moorland Closed to Public Moorland Closed to Public

Six areas of natural beauty have been closed to visitors because of the amount of rain they e received. All the sites are located on Dartmoor in the West Country and are, in some cases, waist-deep in sodden peat. Sue Halse, Dartmoor Care Programme Officer, commented in the Daily Express today: t may be months before the paths have recovered enough to be used regularly. We need to let them drain off and rest otherwise they will be permanently ruined. br adventure holiday wales

Members of the public who use the moor for walking, cycling and hunting will be alerted by the distribution of leaflets. And Sue Halse is hopeful that they will respect the need to keep away from these sites and find alternative areas in which to carry out their activities: e have the option of imposing a ban if we are really pushed but at the moment we would prefer to rely on the good will of the public. br holiday park south wales

Those areas affected are: East Cosdon Hill bridlepath by Nine Stones; Ditsworthy Warren across Higher Hartor; Down Tor, to the Stone Row and Nun Cross; Bellever Tor around Laughter Tor to Huckerby; The Two Moors Way over Hameldown to Widecombe; around Holming Beam. cottage holiday wales

Organics Farms Help Wildlife UK Greenfingers Organics Farms Help Wildlife: UK gardening tips advice on Organics Farms Help Wildlife Organic Farms Help Wildlife

Scientific research has confirmed that organic farming is better for Britain wildlife. Chief executive of English Nature David Arnold-Foster presented conclusive evidence of its positive effects to the national conference of the Soil Association yesterday, reports the Independent. verwhelmingly, whether it is birds of conservation concern, weed species or butterflies, the wildlife species which have suffered the greatest declines on farmland as a whole over the last 50 years do better under an organic farming system, he said. holiday in wales

Mr Arnold-Foster comments are founded on a survey of 92 wildlife species that was carried out over a period of four years. Its results showed that 30 of these species were more common on organic farms, compared with just 4 on conventional farms. holiday wales

The buttercup, which has seen a dramatic decline in numbers, is only to be found on organic farms, whilst birds and insects all benefit from the absence of pesticides and greater crop diversity. In response, the Environment Minister Michael Meacher said that the Government is committed to encouraging farmers to become more {reen If such methods are proving so helpful to Britain wildlife across its fields, what about on a smaller scale, in the UK gardens Food for thought for all us gardeners... cottage holiday in wales

Long-Haul Nectar UK Greenfingers Long-Haul Nectar: UK gardening tips advice on Long-Haul Nectar Long-Haul Nectar

Scientists have discovered that nectar from plants enables tiny songbirds to migrate thousands of miles. The Independent reports on the findings by the Swiss Ornithological Institute first announced in the journal Ibis. Birds including warblers and black caps normally have a diet of berries and insects, but on their long flights from Africa to Britain they stop-over in areas around the Mediterranean. The research has shown that during these stop-overs the birds feed on high-energy nectar which they can consume without using up energy. caravan holiday in wales

Birds were found taking nectar from local plants and, when subsequently tested, showed a marked preference for a sugar-rich nectar substitute rather than insects. Scientists say that this shows the importance of monitoring climate changes, since resulting changes to plants flowering habits could have serious side effects; for instance, not having nectar available at the time that the birds arrive. camping holiday wales

Lunar Eclipse Tonight UK Greenfingers Lunar Eclipse Tonight: UK gardening tips advice on Lunar Eclipse Tonight Lunar Eclipse Tonight

Britain is in for a treat tonight, when the moon is eclipsed for the first time in the 21st century. Beginning at 6.42pm, the Earth s shadow will gradually cover the Moon, completely obscuring it from 7.50pm to 8.52pm. It won t disappear, however, since light from the Sun will continue to reach the Moon, possibly causing it to glow red. Robin Scagell of the Society for Popular Astronomy comments in The Times, The Moon will darken and may turn a reddish or yellow colour, depending on how much cloud there is around. accommodation holiday wales

Scientists are expecting this to be one of the most impressive lunar eclipses in living memory. Fingers crossed for a cloud-free night... holiday last minute wales

Clinton the Conservationist

Landscape conservation may not have been a major issue for most of the 8 years of Bill Clinton s presidency of the USA. But in the dying days of his period of office he has demonstrated the dramatic powers available to the president with an announcement that has thrilled - and surprised - environmentalists. holiday wales walking

The Independent reports that he has ordered that some 60 million acres of the USA s national forests (about 30% of the total) now carry a banning order for any logging or mining activities. The popularity of the announcement with conservationists is matched by opposition from the logging industry and other commercial bodies whose activities are restricted. Of particular interest is the Tongass National Forest that covers some 17 million acres of the coast in southern Alaska. 9 million acres of the forest are protected and for this area of wooded islands and moutainous coast, the order safeguards the largest temperate rainforest in the world. family holiday wales

The Tongass forest, like others along the western coastal areas of north America, is home to vast areas covered with some of the most majestic trees in the world, including the largest, the giant sequoia and redwood, spruce and hemlock. Seeds of the trees were first introduced to Britain from these areas during the 19th century. holiday riding wales

As well as the broader goal of landscape conservation, perhaps President Clinton s decision was partly influenced by the fascination aroused on a previous visit to California when he was shown how the giant sequoia tree grows over a period of hundreds of years from a tiny seed. adventure holiday wales

Domes for MP s Garden UK Greenfingers Domes for MP s Garden: UK gardening tips advice on Domes for MP s Garden Domes for MP s Garden

Ex-Deputy Prime Minister Michael Heseltine is reported to have commissioned 16 miniature domes for his magnificent garden at Thenford Hall in Northamptonshire. The Tory MP, who is standing down from his seat at the next election, was one of the Millennium Dome most vocal supporters, a connection not lost on the Mail on Sunday today. holiday park south wales

These smaller versions will be used to house a range of exotic birds and are just one element of a major -million revamp of Michael Heseltine estate. Made of wood, steel, glass and, in some cases, decorated with an extra layer of copper, the custom-made aviaries will cost around, 000 each. cottage holiday wales

Thenford Hall is already remarkable for its arboretum, which features 3, 500 trees from around the world, and is the biggest of its kind in Europe. It is apparently known as Tarzan Jungle by local residents. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Mail reports that the MP is now spending considerably more time on his garden than on politics... holiday in wales

Hedge Bill in Parliament UK Greenfingers Hedge Bill in Parliament: UK gardening tips advice on Hedge Bill in Parliament Hedge Bill in Parliament

Recent decades have seen a marked increase in disputes between neighbours arising from fast-growing Leylandii hedges. Last year one such argument ended in death, when a retired civil servant was shot by his neighbour. holiday wales

This week, Tory MP John Taylor hopes to bring an end to these rows when he presents a bill to Parliament that will allow councils to intervene in disputes over hedges if and when ormal courtesy has failed cottage holiday in wales

The bill has the support of Hedgeline, an organization set up by Michael Jones, who spent 25 years battling to reduce the height of his neighbour Leylandii. It stands a good chance of becoming law, although, as the Independent on Sunday points out, Parliamentary time is limited in this election year. caravan holiday in wales

Evolution Warning UK Greenfingers Evolution Warning: UK gardening tips advice on Evolution Warning Evolution Warning

Research being carried out in the Negev desert is providing scientists with fascinating insights into the ongoing process of evolution. The study of numerous bird species in the area found them to be evolving at unusually fast rates. camping holiday wales

Much of the reason for this is ascribed to the high levels of biodiversity in the Negev (which means that there is considerable genetic variety available for the creation of new species), and to its extremely changeable environmental conditions (to which the birds must adapt). Dr Salit Kark, who is conducting the research, believes that ven if the overall numbers are not high, this is a region in which speciation (the creation of new species) could take place. br accommodation holiday wales

The controversy over plans for a lavish garden in remembrance of Diana, Princess of Wales that we announced in August is continuing. Following confirmation that the Royal National Rose Society, the organization planning the garden as an extension of its existing garden at St Albans, is having its plans for the garden investigated by the Charity Commission, the society will also have to face questions from its members.
