In 1984, he was appointed Vice Chairman and Group Managing Director, and in 1987 was named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. He subsequently relinquished the role of Chief Executive Officer in 2000.

Sir Ian holds a bachelor`s degree in commerce from Birmingham University in England, from which he also received an honorary doctorate in 2001. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the World Travel & Tourism Council and is also a member of the CBI President`s Committee.
He also has been a director of the Council of Brewers and Licensed Retailers Association, and served as Chairman of the organisation from 1992 to 1994. In addition, Sir Ian served as Chairman of the Stock Exchange Listed Companies Advisory Council from 1992 to 1998. Sir Ian was knighted in January 1995.
